Program Overview: 

The broad goal of the course is to explore and contrast the mental health systems of the United States and the United Kingdom.  In both the U.S. and the U.K. students will engage in classroom discussions of assigned readings; visit mental health facilities: forensic psychiatric center, mental health providers, and mental health consumers, with a field trip to Ann Arbor, Wales, and Dublin.

Students will be assessed by participation in classroom discussions, small reaction papers, and a large integrative paper contrasting the two mental health systems.  Two weeks will be spent in each city - Holland and Liverpool.  

While in the U.S. and U.K. you will: 
  •  Tour mental health facilities including the Michigan Psychiatric Forensic Center and the Battle Creek Veteran's Hospital
  •  Learn about the health care system in the U.S.
  •  Learn about the National Health Care system in the U.K.
  •  Speak with consumers of mental health services in the U.S. and U;K.
  •  Take trips to Dublin, Wales, and the Irish Sea
  •  Explore Liverpool
