Program Overview

Study abroad in Cuba and immerse yourself in the island’s rich history and tropical culture. Cuba is a unique country in the Caribbean known not only for its gastronomy, music, and arts, but also for its universal health care and educational systems. CIEE’s Study in Havana program gives students the opportunity to take classes about Cuban history, literature, arts, race, cinema, dance, public health, pedagogy, and community development in English. Students also have the option of taking Spanish classes, ranging from beginner to advanced levels, alongside their social science and humanities classes.

Excursions & Activities

  • Explore Old Havana, a UNESCO Heritage site, and immerse yourself in its colonial plazas and cobble stone streets.
  • Visit Revolution Square, a unique urban site known for its manifestations and concerts.
  • Take a dance class to learn about Cuban music and its various genres from ballet to salsa, casino, and rumba.
  • Join a guided tour of Afro-Cuban Temples to understand the history and practice of Afro-Cuban religious syncretism between Catholicism and Santeria.
  • Attend a ballet performance at the Gran Teatro in Old Havana or a baseball game at the Latin American stadium.
  • Travel to the natural reserve and biosphere community of Las Terrazas and swim in the San Juan river. 

Projects, Volunteer Opportunities, or Internships

  • Study in Havana volunteer projects (non-credit) include the opportunity to work at Los Pocitos of Marianao, a peripheral community in Havana. Through this project students can participate in weekly art workshops for children, paint homes in the community, and plant gardens with local neighbors.
